Tom and Carrie Bashaw, both nearly 80 years old, began building their dream home at the top of Mokuhau Road in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Saturday morning, floodwaters from the storm eroded the rocks beneath their home, causing the structure to come crashing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018The whole back half of the house was gone\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe whole back half of the house was gone. Bedrooms, living room,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Winds then lifted what remained of the structure and sent it into the stream below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNever expected my whole house to disappear,\u201d Carrie said. \u201cEverything\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No flood insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The couple said they did not carry flood insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t have flood insurance,\u201d Tom said. \u201cWe never thought it was going to flood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bashaws said their home sat 75 feet away from the stream and 45 feet above it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMother Nature wins, and she wants you, she takes you. She didn\u2019t take us, she just took the house. We\u2019re grateful for that. We have each other,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The couple is now sleeping on cushions inside a storage container on their property along with their two cats, Civa and Ty, while they determine next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not good for my arthritic hip, but it\u2019s sleeping, so that\u2019s good,\u201d Carrie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
