On the evening of Sunday, June 15, two boats collided in Bayou Sara near Saraland, causing 27-year-old Brittney Sherman to fall overboard and injuring 30-year-old Cody Sherman and a 4-year-old boy, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. The injured parties, later revealed to be the woman’s husband and son, were hospitalized.

It wasn’t until just before 11 a.m. the next day that Brittney’s body was found 100 yards from where she fell into the water after an hours-long, multi-agency search, officials said.

According to ALEA, Brittney was “fatally injured” when the 20-foot Avid Center Console vessel she and her family members were on “struck” a 26-foot Regulator Center Console vessel. Both boat operators — 19-year-old Robert T. Lofton, who was steering the smaller boat, and 52-year-old Jerry Hocutt Jr., who was at the helm of the 26-foot vessel — were uninjured.

An investigation by ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division is ongoing. The Mobile County Medical Examiner’s Office declined to provide further comment.

Brittney was a mom of four children, family members confirmed to CBS affiliate WKRG. Now, her husband, Cody, is grappling with the prospect of raising the children without her.

“Brittney I love you more than anything in this world,” Cody wrote on Facebook after his wife’s body was recovered. “I promise to take care of these babies for you, sweetheart! I know that you are up there watching over us.”

“Please show me how to do this,” added Cody, who did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. “I’m not sure how I’m gonna make it and I’m gonna do my best to make you proud. I love you until we meet again!!”

That morning, just before 10 a.m., the grieving father also asked for prayers for their injured son.

“Everyone please pray for my baby boy will make a full recovery,” Cody wrote on Facebook. “This little boy is the toughest person I ever met. Daddy loves you and we will get through this!!”
